500 Miles in 15 Days, Tandem Bike with 2 Children in the Bicycle Trailer...

Do you want to read a story of one very active family...

"Months of planning and physical training had gone into this moment, and now it was time for us to put our plan into action. That plan was for my entire family to spend 15 days bicycle touring through the tidewater regions of North Carolina and Virginia, ending our trip at my parents' home in Fredericksburg, Va. Along the way, we would visit sandy beaches in North Carolina and historic towns in Virginia and at the end we would have a happy reunion with my parents and sisters.

The complicating factor in this plan - and the factor that had my heart racing - was that Kathy and I had never tried bicycle touring with our two children before. In fact, we'd only recently had two children. Our son Daniel was barely 3 years old and our daughter Maggie was just 4 months.

I had been dreaming about and planning this trip before Maggie was even born. But as I looked around at our tandem bicycle; our child bicycle trailer and our heaping piles of food, clothing, diapers, toys, children books and camping gear, my main thought was, "Can we really do this? How are we going to fit all this stuff on our bicycle? And how are we going to pedal that heavy bike for 500 miles?"

Near-panic can be a great motivator. We had already returned our rental car, so there was no turning back. After an hour of cramming supplies into sacks and attaching those sacks to our bike with an abundance of bungee cords, we had finished loading our bicycle. Our children were in the bicycle trailer, surrounded by bags of bagels and fruit.

We pedaled out of town as fast as we could, which was not very fast, and arrived at a national forest campground at dusk. We barely had time to cook our dinner before a thunderstorm broke loose, so we ate in our tiny tent, listening to the thunder and the pouring rain.

As I lay on my back with sweat rolling off my forehead, I thought back through the emotions of the day: the tense excitement of starting a vacation, the teamwork needed to reach our destination, the togetherness of eating a family dinner in our tent, the stress of getting our children to sleep, and the quiet peacefulness of the forest. That’s when I began to realize that our little family adventure was going to be a complete experience – a time of emotional highs and lows. Indeed, the rest our trip was a combination of physical exertion, happy playtimes and frustrating challenges. Put together, it was an incredible experience with many vivid memories."

Bread Delivery in a Bicycle Trailer?

Special bread delivery!
http://a123.g.akamai.net/f/123/12465/1d/www.calgaryherald.com/life/Biking+Baker/2319706/aviv.jpg
I wrote a lot about bicycle trailers and many benefits for parents and kids. Are you ready for next one?

Aviv Fried (pronounced Freed) is the 36-year-old self-trained baker behind Peasant Artisan Bread, an artisan-style bread company that works from a commercial kitchen in the southwest.

Every week, he sends out an e-mail list with his current offerings, and every week, people call or e-mail in their orders. One week, he may make cheese bread or sesame and sunflower; another week, it could be a hearty whole wheat sour dough, perhaps made with flour ground from rare Red Fife organic wheat.

Indeed, all of Fried's loaves are organic, made primarily with grain he buys from Grainworks near Vulcan, south of Calgary.

Born and raised in Israel, Fried moved to Canada 10 years ago with his girlfriend, a filmmaker, after travelling the world. A biomedical engineer by training, he completed a master's degree at the University of Calgary. Then, after graduation, he accepted a job in Toronto's banking industry.

And the bike? "I'm trying to be part of the solution, not the problem, and the environment is a big part of healthy food," he says.

It is another way to use a bicycle trailer, not only for your kids to have fun. Bicycle trailers have many useful benefits!

I just wanted to share with you that article I read lately.
Isn't a good idea?

Bicycle Trailers Get Ready for Toys For Tots Ride

Attention Tucson Residents!!!

Join the Toys for Tots ride, a fantastic event promising to be both fun-filled and charitable, this Saturday, December 5th in Tucson
. Bicyclists of all ages will participate in a toy collection and bike ride. Riders must bring at least one new toy to donate to Toys for Tots, construct a way to keep the toys aboard themselves or their bike during the ride and if motivated to do so, arrive with their bicycles decorated for the holidays. Members of GABA (Greater Arizona Bicycling Associate) have organized this event. Two rides will be held, one for more advanced cyclists will begin at Udall Park at 8:30 with a round trip route of 30-35 miles; and another more family oriented ride will begin at McCormick Park at 9:30 for a 10 mile round trip ride. Both rides will end at the Reid Park Zoo, where participants donate their toys to the big red box, and receive FREE admission into the zoo
Riders in both groups will be committed to staying together and arriving at the zoo together. Typically two groups will form in each ride, with riders often regrouping to find the pace that feels most comfortable. No one is left behind! Consider hitching your tandem, kids bicycle trailer, or child’s bike seat to your bicycle and join in the fun. If your child is catching a ride on, or attached to, your bike, remember to include a toy donation from each of you. Pre-registration is not required, just show up early enough to sign in and get your family and your bicycle ready for the ride. For more information check out the GABA website or contact Pam Cullop at pam@bikegaba.org , 290-4321 or 271-6678.

Bike Barn for Bikes and Bicycle Trailers In Cape Henlopen Park

If you live close to Cape Henlopen State Park or you are planning to visit the park you may like the latest news regarding the park and the new bike barn for bicycles, bicycle trailers and more...

Now, the 10-year-old popular program has a new home, with room for growth, thanks to those same volunteers.

Members of the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park recently finished work on a bike barn, a 16-foot-by-24-foot shed that holds bicycles, kiddie trailers, bicycle trailers, and helmets ready to be used by the thousands of people who flock to the coastal park each year.

"It's a very nice ride around the park -- it gives everybody a chance to see the park that they wouldn't by just walking," said Jim Noles, a board member of the Friends group. The park has three miles of paved bike trails, in a loop.

The barn replaces a smaller structure that has housed the bikes for several years. The old shed is being used by the nature center staff for storage.

It will give the program room to expand as more bikes are donated, holding up to 40 bikes, as well as space to maintain them and store parts, Noles said.

"Also, it has to be more convenient for the public to be able to get to the bikes," Noles said.

The bike barn took the volunteers about two weeks to build.

The program is funded through donations -- about $1,000 a year -- and operated by volunteers.

Cyclists can sign the bikes out at the Seaside Nature Center for two-hour blocks.

The program began with 15 basic bikes, with coaster brakes and no gears. Used bikes have gradually been donated, bikes and pull-behind trailers for infants and toddlers, bicycle trailers.

Park visitors take more than 6,000 bike rides a year, with an average of 1,000 a month during the peak of the summer season. That volume means more maintenance on the bikes, which requires more space.

The bike program is just one of the Friends' many efforts on behalf of the park. Planning is under way for a playground there, which will expand each year, Noles said.

That's great idea, hopefully more of them will appear near us.

I wonder what do you think about the idea?

Electric Bicycles are perfect to pull Bicycle trailers

Electric bicycles have been around a while, but it was the quantum leap in technology that gave them new life. The older models were unsophisticated machines with heavy batteries that only lasted a few miles. Today’s new battery technology has caused an explosion in the industry that makes the new electric bikes hard to distinguish from a regular bicycle. Modern battery-charging systems have also been a game-changer for electric bicycles. One manufacturer is even boasting of a battery system that charges in as little as 30 minutes. The range for electric bikes has increased as well.
Modern electric bicycles also have advanced features never dreamed of several years ago. One of those is “regenerative braking.” This feature allows a rider to use the electric motor to slow the bicycle while traveling downhill and use that force to generate electricity for later use. The design allows more than 10 percent more battery life and saves wear and tear on regular braking systems.
Electric bicycles are good for commute as well as taking your children to a park. It is easy to attach a bicycle trailer and have fun with kids on a bicycle trail track.

Share with us, what do you think about electric bikes? would you use one of them?

Bicycle Trailer for Everyday Use

Allen uses a bicycle and the bicycle trailer for almost all of his daily transportation needs. He rides year-round in rain or snow, hot or cold.

Allen, a 44-year-old is a hard-core cyclist who typically rides 150 to 200 miles a week on daily errands and to his job as a waiter at St. Elmo Steakhouse.

He estimates he saves $12,000 a year on car insurance, gasoline, car payments and parking by living a close-to-carless lifestyle. His wife, Kellie, has a 2010 Subaru Outback, a vehicle Allen says he usually only drives or rides in when he's with his wife or whole family.

The benefits are not just financial, Allen said cycling for transportation keeps his energy levels high and allows him the luxury of not counting calories.

"I'd rather start the day like that than sitting in the car cussing at my dashboard," he said.

On a recent morning, Allen covered the roughly 6 miles from his home near Downtown to his daughter's school on the Northside in roughly 25 minutes -- roughly the time a motorist may allot for such a trip during the morning rush hour.
He rides his both kids in the bicycle trailer for many benefits and everyday use.
Find many types of bicycle trailers on the market and follow, maybe not exactly, the great example and lifestyle.

It is a great idea, with so many benefits!

New European Option for Bicycle Trailer Users

Have you heard or seen Taga stroller?
I don't think these models are available for buying in US but they are in Europe. When they come to our country I think Taga Strollers will be a great hit! They are getting popular in Europe and people like them. I plan to get one for my family. You can get it instead of a bicycle trailer and a jogging stroller, they are two-functional and very easy to convert. Parent pedals the bicycle, children can seat in their seats, it looks like a lot of fun and great time to spend free time actively.
The Taga stroller trike is something that you probably want to take on a bike trail, and have a blast cruising many miles.
The Taga stroller trike can fold up and fit in the trunk. It also has covered seats for rainy weather. Right now, it is only available in Europe, but it really is needed all across the world.
AND DON'T FORGET HELMETS FOR KIDS!!!

Bicycle Trailer Safety Tips

Please, review safety tips for bicycle trailer users:
  • Children riding in bicycle trailers must always wear a helmet. Proper use of a bike helmet reduces risk of head injury by as much as 88%. Adults should also always use a helmet for safety and role modeling.
  • Use a safety flag, which helps motorists see you.
  • Use hand signals before turning left or right.
  • Pay attention to bicycle trailer weight limits. For child bike trailers, confirm the minimum height and weight and use any recommended inserts for smaller children.
  • Follow all posted road signs – a bicycle is part of traffic.
  • When riding at night, attach a light to the front of your bike and reflectors to the rear of the trailer.
  • When hauling a pet, always secure them with the safety leash.
  • Before riding, check the bicycle's connection to the trailer and be sure the tires are properly inflated.
  • Practice riding in a safe area before taking the trailer on the road. When practicing, pay particular attention to breaking distance, which increases with a trailer attached to your bike.

Bicycle Trailer and Jogging Stroller in one Model

Do you know that you can convert most of the bicycle trailers into jogging strollers?
I would like to share what I learned about an important and very practical feature that bicycle trailers have.
Most of them are designed to convert to jogging strollers with a special kit, included with the purchase of the bicycle trailer.
That feature is perfect for active parents, who want to exercise and be with their children at the same time. Another important benefit is to introduce kids to healthy lifestyle and being a positive role model for them. Our kids will be most likely active and fit when they grow up,if we give them that lesson through our example now.
Bicycle trailer that converts into a jogging stroller is a perfect product to show our kids, how we spend our free time, and how we value healthy and active lifestyle.
I use my Schwinn bicycle trailer for family biking and also for jogging with my baby in the park, it is so practical and useful. I heard from my friends that they use both features of bicycle trailers too, and they like that convenience.

Please share with us, what you think, if you ever used bicycle trailers as joggers?
what's your opinion.

How Safe are Bicycle Trailers?

Bicycle trailers
attach to a bike's rear axle or frame, and can carry children from 1 trough 6 or so.
They provide some protection to passengers since children are seated, strapped in, and usually enclosed in a zippered compartment. Bicycle trailers have a rigid frame enclosed in durable fabric, which offers some protection for young passengers if the unit rolls over. But children still must wear bike helmets. Because the bicycle trailer is closer to the ground, it is potentially safer then a bicycle-mounted seat in a case of accident. Some designs have a hitching arm that allows the bike to fall without tipping the bicycle trailer. For safety it is recommended to attach a 4-7 foot-tall, high-visibility orange flag.

Let us know, what your experience with bicycle trailers.
Would you recommend bicycle trailers for parents?

Bicycle Trailer, Helmet, and Recalls

Taking your child for a bicycle ride in a bicycle trailer is fun and so beneficial for you and your baby. It's very nice activity for my family and I know lots of families, that enjoy it, too.
Wearing helmets while riding in bicycle trailers is a very important habit, that every parent and child should remember. Helmets protect and minimize potential injuries.
There are many helmets for bicycle trailer on the today's market, which one to choose to keep your child safe? maybe you already have one and not sure if it's good and protects correctly from injuries?
I would like to write about 2 recalls on child's helmets.
1. PRODUCT: 9.000 girl's bicycle helmets sold by Toys-R-Us stores from 10/99-4/00 for about $13. The helmets are mostly pink mixed with silver glitter. Decals on the helmets read " Hearts & Flowers". These helmets are size small, for ages 2-5 years. A label inside reads " Distributed by: CYCLE EXPRESS, the helmets made in China are packed in the box that reads " Hearts and Flowers Helmet Combo Value Pack" and " ITEM # 10235". The helmets are sold with a bike bag-purse combo and hair accessories.
MANUFACTURER: Cycle Express, INC, 312 Fifth Ave. 5-th floor, New York, NY 10001.
DANGER: Riders wearing these helmets are not adequately protected from falls, and could suffer severe head injuries or death.
CONSUMER ACTION: Stop using the helmet, return it to Toys R Us for $7 credit.

2. PRODUCT: About 70.000 L.A. Crusin' bicycle helmets sold by Kmart and Rose's stores nationwide, 10/99-3/00 for about $8.
The youth and adult-sized helmets are white or black and the child sizes are either blue or pink.
MANUFACTURER: Rand International, Attention: Customer Service Dept., 51 Executive Blvd., Farmingdale, NY 14735-4718.
DANGER: The helmets fail impact testing and labeling required under CPSC's Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets. Children wearing these helmets are not properly protected from falls, and may suffer severe head injuries.
CONSUMER ACTION: Stop using these bicycle helmets immediately, and return them to Rand International for free replacement helmet.

If you have those kinds of bicycle helmets and still using them for bicycle trailers or bikes, please stop using them, you want your children to be safe and protected.
I hope that information is helpful, and some parents check their helmets, if they are not been recalled.

What is Safer? - a Bicycle Trailer or Bicycle-mounted Seats

These two-wheeled carts, designed to be towed behind a bicycle, have two bicycle-type wheels and a long hitching arm that fastens onto the bicycle's chain assembly or seat post.
Bicycle trailers are safer then bicycle-mounted baby seats, since kids are seated, strapped in, and enclosed inside a zippered compartment.
Bicycle-mounted seats can make a bike unstable and hard to mount and dismount.
Bicycle trailers are best for special biking routes and trailers, they are not the best products to go on streets with passing cars. For safety's sake, trailers should be considered off-road vehicles, used only in parks and safe trails without the risk of car/bicycle encounters.
When I take my child biking with me in his bicycle trailer, I always check very carefully the proper mounting, and always make sure, that he is wearing a helmet. Helmets are very important to protect and prevent from possible injuries. It is also very important to teach your child from the beginning the habit of wearing helmet.
It is also important to learn how to ride the bike while the bicycle trailer is connected, easy on bumps, and easy turns. Always remember, that when your bike speeds up,braking becomes harder, especially on wet surfaces.
Bicycle trailers are fun for kids, but always remember about safety.

Places to go biking with your kids - Cape Cod, Massachusetts

If you planning to visit Massachusetts and you like biking - the best thing is to spend a day on biking trail on Cape Cod.
The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a paved bikeway that runs 28 miles from South Dennis to Wellfleet. The terrain is relatively flat, with some minor grades at certain sections. It offers the most variety in scenery and natural Cape landscapes available of all the regional bike routes. The trail is very attractive, with restaurants along the way, picnic areas, stores, beaches...
Biking is my favorite way to spend free time with my family, especially while on vacation. My little son always enjoys riding in his favorite bicycle trailer, attached to my bike. It is always fun and great entertaining for him and a perfect way for me and my husband to spend an active day and exercise.
This summer vacation we spend on Cape Cod at Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, Mass. The resort is a great place for the whole family, it was the perfect vacation, nice weather, golfing, beaches, tennis, and family biking with my son in the bicycle trailer. He would not make it on his own, more fun for David was riding in the bicycle trailer and watch nice landscapes. My son never complained about spending the whole day on the trail, he was happy and perfectly entertained.
Thanks to such a product, like bicycle trailer, we can go biking and take our little one with us, instead leaving him with our baby sitter. There are many kinds of bicycle trailers, made by Schwinn and In Step.
The other benefit of biking together as a family is teaching our son, how to spend free time in a very active way and to build up his desire to fitness and exercise.

If you ever went biking on Cape Cod, please share with us with your comments and stories.
